Creative careers are notoriously competitive to get into. In the current financial climate, many popular creative professions, including photographers, artists, writers and fashion designers, have struggled to find paid opportunities. Yet this is not the case for all creative careers, especially not in the digital industries.
If you are an artistic and imaginative person, but are worried about the opportunities available in creative sectors, read on to find out where you could put your skills and interests to use.
Content development
Jobs in journalism and traditional forms of writing can be hard to come by, but web content developers are still in demand with the growing importance of websites and digital media. Copywriters and content editors will write copy for all manner of different companies, from business-to-business firms and financial organisations to marketing agencies or online retailers. They write promotional copy, email campaigns, blog posts and newsletters – so if you have strong writing skills and are capable working online, this could be the area for you.
Graphic design and user experience
Like content writers, graphic designers are needed in all types of digital company. Graphic designers still work to create images and page designs for magazines, brochures or marketing campaigns, but can also be involved in designing logos, images and fonts for websites. Graphic designers need to be extremely creative and flexible – putting their artistic talents and imagination to all types of different projects.
Digital marketing
Digital marketing is a huge industry. With a great variety of roles, digital marketing agencies and big companies will always be looking out for talented digital strategists, marketing managers, digital project managers and online account managers. The roles are all quite varied, and whilst they may not always be solely creative, responsibilities often include developing design content with designers or developing website user-experience strategies.
Web design
Web design or “front-end development” concerns the programming and development of websites and web-based applications. Front-end developers and web designers often collaborate with graphic designers to create and build websites, apps or interactive ads. Their responsibilities may include programming web pages and coding, so strong IT skills are essential, as well as a creative and innovative mind.
Product design
Product design involves the designing and planning of innovative new products; these can range from domestic goods to larger more industrial products such as cars. Designers and manufacturers will come together in this job path, often specialising in a particular industry or type of product. The variety in this industry is endless as big brands are constantly coming up with new ideas and briefs for product designers to work on.
